Gizmoproject released version 3.0 of their popular voip client and it brings some interesting new features. Support for Jabber has been extended and now allows us to exchange files via the jabber protocol. You now can call to users of Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo messenger, and soon Gtalk will be added too. Next to custom avatars and group chat, this is an interesting update!

An Asterisk Developer going by de name ‘Oej’ is working on a new SIP channel that solves some problems with the current SIP stack. Going by the codename ‘pineapple’ a new channel (chan_sip3) will be ready after next Asterisk 1.4 release.
The new SIP channel will better fit the SIP architecture and better scale to larger environments. It will also bring STUN support!

Today I was visiting the Asterisk website and noticed the complete redesign for asteriskpbx.com and asterisknow.org (the very userfriendly GUI for Asterisk). It features the latest news on Asterisk, as well has easy access to the Asterisk source code and developers blogs.
Go visit the Asterisk website and see for yourself and find out that Asterisk 1.4.0 will be released soon!

Skype 3.0 is available for download. (Well, for Windows that is). Since it leaps from 2.5 to 3.0 I was expecting major new features. However, it’s a little disappointment. With its’ 20MB download it’s more bloated than ever.
Among the new features are:
- Rich Mood Messages
- Connection Wizard
- API: rich mood messages
- API: public chat support
- API: FILE TRANSFER object
However, the biggest change is the option to play games! What in the world do we need that for? History is full of applications that went downhill after they got to bloated. Remember ICQ anyone?
To the developers of Skype: let’s end it here and concentrate on voice and video. And maybe it’s time to update the Mac and Linux client too?

Today I was wondering what would make the perfect IM client for me. Hey, Isn’t this blog about VoIP? Yes it is but since more and more IM clients come with voice we see a merger of these programs. What I would like to see in an IM client:
- SIP compatible to connect to my landline voip service.
- Support for Google’s Gtalk audio chat.
- Support for Skype’s audio chat (probably never going to happen).
- Text chat to gtalk and msn.
- Support for shared folders like msn messenger.
- Support for custom emoticons (animated if possible).
- Clean interface.
- Store chatlog online (like in gtalk).
Is there already such a killer application out there? Please let me know or add your wishes to the wishlist in the comments.
