VoIPonCD an Asterisk At Home Killer?

I really like the flexibility and versatility of Asterisk PBX. However it’s not really easy to install and has a vast amount of options and configurations.

Therefore I like preconfigured installs like AsteriskAtHome and Xorcom Rapid.

However, both have some disadvantages (too me, that is).

AsteriskAtHome

  • comes with CentOS while I prefer Debian or Ubuntu.
  • Has a not so easy upgrade path.

XorCom Rapid

  • Slow development
  • Less features than AsteriskAtHome.

Today I stumbled upon VoIPonCD. It’s debian based, is more up-to-date than Rapid and provides an easy upgrade mechanism using apt-get repositories.

So I downloaded the 180MB image and put it to work:

Install went smoothly. A regular Debian install, and a running system in ten minutes.
However: what’s next? There was no webserver running, so I could not connect too the all-promising web interface.

Back to the site to read some documentation. However, hardly there and the site is mostly in German (which I can read but many of you probably not).

On to the forum for some extra help. However, not many topics and users there.

Ehm… that’s enough for today. I guess voiponcd, although very promising, isn’t ready for prime time yet.

Can anyone point me to a asterisk install that:

  • is Debian or Ubuntu based.
  • is easy to upgrade.
  • is as feature-rich as AsteriskAtHome
  • supports a lot of hardware (some ISDN would be nice).

I think that - until I find something like listed above- going for the manual approach is the best.

So is VoIPonCD a Asterisk at Home killer? I think they are not there yet…

Oh, sorry to read that your installation didn’t went very smooth and your apache didn’t work. I’m just setting up http://www.voiponcd.com and let http://www.voiponcd.de just the german part of VoIPonCD. As you may know VoIPonCD is german and at first I just created it for german users - I never thought it was getting such a huge response. Then, realizing that it could grow a little bit faster than I thought, I quickly added the multi language support. So VoIPonCD is there in english, too. Well, except for the little booting part, excuse me. I know there are some things which could be improved but I appreciate any help I can get, I’m just one man and therefore I can only work for 3 people if I don’t sleep and have no other life than VoIPonCD. But unfortunately it’s just nice to release free software but my CD isn’t baking bread so I have to work, too. This consumes at least 10 of the 24 hours.

So please stay tuned, VoIPonCD will come as expected, but some weeks later - let me sleep at leat 3 hours a day ;-).

thank you for creating feedback for VoIPonCD,
    Rolf

    Hi Rolf,

Thanks for providing some feedback here. I guess it would have shined on me if I would have done the same to you and the project. Sorry for that.

Having said that, I will keep on watching the project for the near future. I think is is very promising and comes very near to the ‘ideal’ voip distro as I described before.

Please note that I was not trying to be harsh on the distro, just stating that it was still fresh and in it early stages.

So keep on the good work! May be you can be more specific in what area’s you could use some help?

I as well decided to download it and try it. I use redhat / fedora / and slackware primarily. I also downloaded the install and was wondering where everything was when it came up. It just looks like the default debian install. I see no asterisk or even a web server. I didn’t download the sh script because I figured it was just in German.

I would really like to give this a try. I have asterisk@home running (V 1.5) and just looking for something to upgrade with and I thought this was the answer. I saw it on voip-info.org, I now have a system with your the voiponcd loaded, but nothing is there!

Is IS there but you have to get in touch with VoIPonCD via webbrowser. So just point to your new server with http:// and you are there, if not there obviously went something wrong but I didn’t get any messages of having so much trouble. Did you connect your server to the internet? Did the debian installer recognise your network card? Did you get an IP via DHCP or assigned it manually (and correctly)?

And now you can go to http://www.voiponcd.com (and not .de) and you will see everything in english language. Hope this will help you a bit.

As for the help I need I just can say that I need time, so if there is somebody who sells time I would be the perfect buyer :-). But in real, I need help by somewhat experienced users for helping the newbies in the forum at http://forum.voiponcd.com (or .de).

    best regards
    Rolf

  5. [...] Some time ago I was writing on VoIPonCD and how it did not meet my expectations. Last night I did a new install, this time on an old dust-collecting Pentium III. (Last attempt was in a vmware virtual machine). This time install went smoothly. I had a running debian system in no time, including asterisk and the web interface that comes with VoIPonCD. Meanwhile an english website (www.voiponcd.com) has been launched and an active community is developing in the forums. Rolf (the author) has even honored me with leaving some comments (see the article)! [...]

Asterisk at home work fine and 100% on first install and can be instaled by a 10 year children, but work on very bad Centos
it’s good if you are happy with basic original feature and don’t try to change anithing.
I think a serious distrib must be on Debian and you are on the good way, but yesterday I try to install without succes your system
after install I have just a basic debian on my disk and must update
manualy libraries and install all servers myself !!
I’ll try another time tomorow to setup by the CD way.
