Asterisk Developer working on new SIP channel

An Asterisk Developer going by de name ‘Oej’ is working on a new SIP channel that solves some problems with the current SIP stack. Going by the codename ‘pineapple’ a new channel (chan_sip3) will be ready after next Asterisk 1.4 release.

The new SIP channel will better fit the SIP architecture and better scale to larger environments. It will also bring STUN support!

Digium launches new Asterisk portal

Today I was visiting the Asterisk website and noticed the complete redesign for asteriskpbx.com and asterisknow.org (the very userfriendly GUI for Asterisk). It features the latest news on Asterisk, as well has easy access to the Asterisk source code and developers blogs.

Go visit the Asterisk website and see for yourself and find out that Asterisk 1.4.0 will be released soon!

Asterisk Video Tutorials

Recently a new site offering Asterisk Tutorials was launched. It has downloadable video tutorials available for Asterisk, TrixBox and FreePBX. However, these tutorials are not free. It’s a commercial site selling these tutorials. I don’t mind paying for a good tutorial but I really think some of these prices are way too expensive! I’m not going to pay almost seventy dollar on a “Getting Started With TrixBox” tutorial. No matter what the quality of the material is!

While these videos might be of use to some of us, I’ll stick with some excellent written tutorials.

Three Other VoIP Systems

While Asterisk is the better known PBX, it might not be best fit for your needs. Maybe it’s too complex for the simple things you would like to accomplish. Than it might be a good idea to look at the alternatives.

  1. PBX4LINUX
PBX4LINUX is a PBX for Linux with strong ISDN support but also has a VoIP gateway. It can be uses as a ISDN <–> VoIP gateway.
  2. FREESWITCH
Freeswitch is a software switch that can connect phone lines from different networks using different protocols. While not a PBX by itself, several modules could be loaded to gain the same functionality.
  3. SIPfoundry sipX PBX
sipX is an open source PBX phone system with enterprise features like voice mail distribution lists and hunt groups.

Next to Asterisk, Freeswitch seems to have the most active development. With it´s GoogleTalk jingle implementation it´s even a little ahead of Asterisk.

FreeSwitch Updates GoogleTalk Protocol

In this very short notice the freeswitch project announces that they’ve updated some modules to speak the new GoogleTalk protocol in high-definition (16khz) audio. Using this software telephony switch you will be able to interface gtalk to other applications like IVR, or to other protocols like SIP and H.323. It’s available for download for Linux, OpenBSD and Windows.
