Want to know if your broadband connection is suitable for internet telephony? You can test the quality of your voip calls at TestYourVoIP.com.
Just go to the site and select one of the eight destinations (most US based and some international locations). Some java applet will run for about 20 seconds and make a test call to that destination. After that, you will receive a report on the quality off the call.
The basic reports are in plain and easy English (varying from ‘Forget the phone, try Pony Express’ till ‘Better than being there!’). The detailed reports are more comprehensive and speak off things as packet loss, codecs and latency.
Good to see that a call from here in The Netherlands to Sydney (about the longest distance possible) still rates almost as good as a decent cell phone call!

If you’ve got a DECT phone (or any other normal phone) collecting dust somewhere and are looking for a way to hook it up to your Asterisk based VoIP connection, you might want to look at this solution. It connects your phone using some cheap components and some smart Asterisk settings. It involves some knowledge of electronics so if you’re afraid of a little soldering, this one is not for you!

D-link has announced the DPH-540, a Wi-fi enabled mobile phone. Beware though! It looks like a normal cellular, but it is not! You will only be able to connect to wireless networks (open access points or public hot spots) and not to the public telephone network (GSM or other). The phone uses SIP so you can use it with any of your favorite voip provider but not with skype!
Still a cool gadget to have but a little expensive if you ask me since it will sell for about 300 dollars.

Freshmeat has a nice article on the problem with SIP behind NAT routers. It speaks of some solutions like STUN and ICE. The article also explains why Skype does not have this problems.

This has been on most of the tech sites today but I still don’t know what all the hype is as about. But here it is: Zoep has released their engine as open source. Sure it’s great that you can develop your own voip-enabled applications but wasn’t that possible before? Well, I think it’s kinda cool that you can embed VOIP in firefox now and the fact that it’s a Dutch company!
